In order to pioneer the collaboration between ITB and TU Delft in the field of Building With Nature in general and its application in Indonesia, the head of the Ocean Engineering Masters Study Program attended an event held by the consortium of the Building With Nature program in Indonesia.
Building with Nature is a concept for watershed and coastal management that makes use of natural processes and forces. This concept balances sustainable ecosystem functions with social functions and economic development. This concept has been applied in several locations in Indonesia, especially for environmental restoration and to achieve sustainability
The concept of building with nature is a sustainable solution for Indonesia that generates awareness of the potential for adaptation and mitigation. Some of the additional benefits of this approach need to be increased and the capacity for implementation needs to be developed. To ensure a consistent, sustainable, and large-scale implementation of Building with Nature in Indonesia, incorporating it into curricula and training programs across the country is key.
For this reason, a workshop was held by Deltares and Delft Technical University and is part of the large project Building with Nature Indonesia led by Wetlands International and Ecoshape (https://www.ecoshape.org/en/projects/building-with-nature-indonesia /) attended by academics, researchers and representatives of the Indonesian government. One of the universities involved is ITB.
This workshop focuses on an approach to how to develop the teaching and training program Building with Nature. The outputs and results of the workshop expected from this workshop include:
- Share experiences related to Building with Nature / Nature-based solution practices among participants
- Developing a Building with Nature teaching and training program for each participant, based on the target group (institution) concerned
- Initiated the formation of the Building with Nature community in Indonesia
