Student Academic Visit to IPC and BMKG

On September 23-24, 2019, the Master’s Program of Ocean Engineering ITB held a visit to PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II (Persero) or more commonly referred to as the Indonesia Port Corporation (IPC) and the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The two places of visit are in North Jakarta and Central Jakarta, respectively.

The visit to IPC began with remarks from the Head of the Strategic Project Management Division and the Chair of the Master’s Program of Ocean Engineering Dr. Nita Yuanita. The event was then hosted by Fauzi Andrisuryo from the Strategic Project Management Division, where he was also an alumnus of the Master’s Program of Ocean Engineering ITB. In his presentation, he explained that IPC currently has several strategic projects including New Priok Port in Kalibaru, North Jakarta, CBL Port in Bekasi, Sorong Port in Papua, Maritime Tower in Tanjung Priok, North Jakarta, and Kijing Port in West Kalimantan. During the presentation session, Fauzi explained more specifically about Kijing where the port had entered the construction phase.

After the presentation, the program continued with a visit to the Maritime Museum. The new museum was founded in 2019, showing the history of the port in Indonesia along with several rides such as ship dioramas complete with display screens and photo spots.

The visit continued to the IPC Control Tower. In this tower, all loading and unloading activities and incoming and outgoing ships can be monitored by officers. In addition, there is also a display of monitoring cameras installed in the jetty and stacking field of the IPC.

The visit to IPC was then concluded with a visit to Pier 3 of Tanjung Priok. At the pier, there are container loading and unloading equipment such as ship to shore cranes, rail-mounted gantry cranes, and container transport trucks.

Opening and Greeting

On the 2nd day of the Field Lecture, participants visited BMKG in the Central Jakarta area. The first party met at BMKG was the Press and Media Relations section headed by Dwi Rini Endra Sari. In his presentation, he explained that the current BMKG challenges are not only about how to obtain accurate data but also how to package information from the processed data so that it is easily understood by the public. This is very important because the character of the people in each region of Indonesia is so diverse that successful methods of presenting information in one place or circle may not necessarily be successful in another place or circle.

The event continued with a visit to the meteorology department and from BMKG. In the meteorological section, climate conditions from Indonesia are displayed as well as future weather predictions. In the geophysics section, earthquake activity is displayed throughout Indonesia and there is monitoring activity whether an earthquake has the potential to cause tectonic tsunamis.

The visit continued to the R&D section of the BMKG. In this section, it describes the products developed by BMKG itself. One of the products from BMKG can predict the distribution of forest fires.
